About us
Animals Kosovo Foundation was established on April 1, 2024, by Sadri Sopi. He has been living in the Netherlands for almost 30 years.
In addition to his paid job, he has dedicated himself to helping people in Kosovo after the war. The fate of those in need, both humans and animals, has always had a strong pull on him.
When he visits his family and friends in Kosovo, the situation of the animals deeply affects him. That is the reason why the foundation was established.
Sadri met Piet Hellemans during a Dierenlot meeting. Through Piet Hellemans, Suze Steenbergen and Franca Borren also became involved. All three are ambassadors, providing advice on daily operations and input regarding decisions related to the execution of activities.
Why Animals Kosovo is so desperately needed!
For over 30 years, the reproduction of stray animals in Kosovo has grown disproportionately. This has led to a tremendous amount of unnecessary suffering. Due to the large number of animals and limited space (Kosovo is about a quarter the size of the Netherlands), the animals are forced to move toward the mountains. They are driven away by residents or by stronger animals of their own kind.
This leads to food shortages, freezing, predation by wild animals such as wolves, or living along busy roads, where many animals are killed by cars.
We have an amazing on-site team, full of ambition and, above all, a lot of love for animals. Together, we have mapped out the situation and developed an approach based on years of experience, expertise from the Netherlands, and feedback from Kosovo.
This approach has been presented to both the national and local governments in Kosovo, who have welcomed us and offered their cooperation to remove any obstacles.
Since the beginning of April 2024, we have launched our mission and sterilizations are in full swing. We work exclusively with local veterinarians and volunteers, without excluding anyone. We compensate the veterinarians with a fixed agreed amount per procedure. €45,- per dog and €25,- per cat.
